Summary: Interviewed by Callum and John about his experiences as a pilot in WW2 and his squadron.
John Fletcher, Callum, Ferriter and Carl Lewis interview Harold about his experience in the second world war.I was posted to Growtingthorpe near Leicester which was an OTU training centre, Operational Training Unit, I was sent ther to supposedly pick a crew, when I got there, in a great big building with hundreds of air crew, Gunners Navigators Wireless operators, Engineers and Pilots and there was a crew with no Pilot, I don’t what had happened, so I got them and they got me and I couldn’t have picked a better crew.I particularly remember the squadron I got was called number 44 Rhodisian, that was because I had a Rhodisian lad as a gunner and a Rhodisian lad as my bomb aimer. So we had no choice of the name if you had one Rhodisian in the crew you were number 44 Rhodisian.
Hi Guys, I know it isn't mentioned but just to clarify, although South African pilots did fly with the RAF, it is more likely that John's gunner and bomb aimer came from Rhodesia, Worksop. Situated on the left of the A57 this side of Worksop.
Apologies to all for generalising before but this is totally new to me. I had a poke around and found the following about 44Sqn http://www.raf-lincolnshire.info/44sqn/44sqn.htm
