Chapeltown park

This is Sheffield's Chapeltown park, it was once a hill in the old days... This is mostly used in winter for sledging, and snow fights (It's fun!) In the summer, parents and kids go have a brown tan. In the 1800's this was halfly a funeral grave park and the other side was a fun football field. Untill Sheffield took away the football field. This was once a really good park to play/relax in.by Darren, Mon 8th Jun 10am

Hyde Park and Park Hill flats, Sheffield

Hyde Park and Park Hill flats, Sheffield This photograph was taken in September 1982. I was a student at Sheffield City Polytechnic, and at the start of my third year we decided to start a Poly newspaper. I managed to convince the others that I should be the photographer, even though I had only owned a camera for four months, and this was an ancient Zenit which I had bought from a secondhand shop in Cambridge. And so, on a gorgeous, bright, early Autumn day, I walked around the city taking photographs for the newspaper to use as stock. I used black and white film - I had never photographed in black and white before. The idea was to build up a large archive of photos to illustrate news stories. I must have shot about ten rolls of film, and most of the images were better than I'd hoped. Well, Sheffield City Press was a success beyond our wildest dreams, and within two years it had won the Guardian Student Media Prize. But I had left Sheffield by then. Before I went, I rescued a handful of my photographs from the newspaper archives. I wonder what happened to the rest? by root, Sat 9th Feb 6pm

February Newsletter

Paul, Becky, Georgy, Joel, Harry, Grace and Carla, Mysheff volunteers talk about life in Stocksbridge. Were doing our February Newsletter a bit early this month. Our work has mainly been in Stocksbridge and High Green over the last few weeks. Grace is working on a film about her grandmothers life on Garlick Farm. Adele and John are working on a film about the Umberella Girls, we would like to to make a bit of a dance film with the umberellas with music from Stocksbridge band. High Green Youth Club team are working on a film with High Green Miners Welfare Agewell Group with some lads from Chapletown going to make a film about the working mens club in Chapletown. Thursday mornings have produced some ideas from local rappers keen to make a rap about local issues for young people with reference to some of the history and local characters of Stocksbridge. Here in the newsletter are a couple of our finished films from Sam, Reece, Callum. The ongoing photography project at Stocksbridge has seen us sorting through 40 years of photos from Stocksbridge Youth Club, we've done one selection but still have loads to go. At Easter we will be presenting our work at the local library in Stocksbridge and Chapletown. Visitors to the site this month have made some interesting comments on life on the Wicker in the 70s, The Rivelin Artist R Scott Temple and the fortress in Endcliffe park from before the war, more comments on these subjects are welcolme.by root, Thu 7th Feb 11pm

An unknown street in the Attercliffe

An unknown street in the Attercliffe district of Sheffield, Monday 22nd February 1971. The ground floor windows of the closest pair of houses seem to have been boarded up with two of their internal doors. Some houses are still occupied but all are no doubt destined for early demolition. At the end of the street is a factory of some kind, affronting one of the planners' idées fixe ...that industry and housing must not co-exist, but should be separately "zoned". I noticed that street lighting arrangements in Attercliffe were unusual. Here a gaslight is affixed to the wall of a house on a bracket ...something I don't remember seeing elsewhere. There were several lamps of unusual design around the district. Can anyone identify DWE 590E? It has a Renault look to me.by root, Sun 3rd Feb 12pm

Rag & Bone Man, Sheffield, 1971.

Not a great quality photo, being a cropping from the original to eliminate a large empty foreground, but an interesting reminder of a once-familiar scene. The rag & bone man, with his horse and cart, is accompanied around the streets of Carbrook, Sheffield, by a party of local children. When I was a boy we were fond of following those sucking-up lorries that used to go around cleaning out the drain openings in the gutters. The crews did not always seem to find our company entirely enjoyable, nor to appreciate our humorous observations concerning their work. When I walked around the Attercliffe area of Sheffield on Monday 22nd February 1971, almost every house was empty ready for demolition. Several walls at the ends of terraces of houses were decorated with loyalist slogans. E II R ...LONG MAY SHE REIGN was one that has stayed in my mind ever since. I have never seen this sort of thing anywhere else, so I assume it must have been a local peculiarity. Mind you, I've never been to Northern Ireland. Its recently been taken over by a local historical society who have already gone quite a way toward bringing back some life to it. Story of Ecclesfield

ECCLESFIELD PARISH CHURCH ALTHOUGH THERE IS no mention of a church at ‘Eclesfelt’, the manor held by Roger de Busli, according to the Domesday Book, the very name, derived from the Latin ‘ecclesia’, ‘a church’, and the Teutonic ‘feld’, ‘open country’ implies that the Anglo-Saxon invaders found a British church there, probably between 625 and 650 AD, though not necessarily on the same site as the present church.by root, Fri 23rd Mar 12pm

Graves Park Ghost

Just over the wall from bunting nook is Sheffield’s largest park, through which used to run the stagecoaches to London. One of the coach and horses is said to still bowl along the old road. The ghostly stagecoach has not been seen since the early 1990s, when a group of people saw it pass through the wall of the lodge and the stone wall beyond to disappear into the mist across the park.. Many years ago an old lady was walking in the same section of the park between the Derbyshire lane gates and bunting nook when she heard a child crying. by root, Fri 23rd Mar 12pm

Spring Heald Jack

MOST SITED GHOST OR WAS HE Spring Time For SheffieldAuthor : Martin Jeffrey Previous pageEmail this article to a friend Most people have heard of Spring Heeled Jack, apparently a ghost like entity with the ability to jump tremendous distances in height and length. In England, during the 1800's there were many sightings from Yorkshire down to Devon, scaring the wits out of people then suddenly disappearing without a trace. Some said he wore a black as night cloak, some said he had horns like the devil but all noticed the fire in his eyes, was he Satan incarnate or merely hysteria amongst common people?by root, Fri 23rd Mar 12pm

St Maries Church Ecclesfield

here is some history of st mary church ecclesfield The early history of the church is shrouded in the mists of time. Popularly the date of founding is given as 1111, but no written records survive to support this date. None of the fabric of the current building is from this time, but there certainly was a church here in the reign of Henry I (1100 – 1135), when the monks of St. Wandrille obtained possession of it.in 1663 a act of parliment said that "all representations of any angel or saint in any…parish church…was to be taken away, defaced and utterly demolished."by root, Fri 23rd Mar 8am

My Grandmother Frances Doris Kelk lived on Carlisle Road and went to old Grimesthorpe School. When I started doing my family history my father George Burford found out he was born not far from this road at 7, Bland street in 1935. the Irony of this is that after living in Darnall for many years when he got married he moved back to Grimesthorpe in 1964 and I attended the very same school as my Grandmother did being one of the last year to attend before it closed as a school and being in the first year to attend the new school at Whiteways.Things cetainly have a way of repeating themselves. Memories of growing up in the Caribbean

The members of this African Caribbean lunch club share their memories of life in the Carribean as a young person and their lives in Sheffield. High Green Development Trust in Sheffield is working with the Local Studies Libary and local young people on a project to record the experiences Sheffield people have of growing up. We hope to build up more of an understanding of the contribution young people make to community life, now and in the past. If you would like to share your memories email us at youthtogether@hgyf.co.uk. or just post them up on the site. .by root, Thu 1st Feb 6am
